Have you ever wished that your winter coat could be a little different today? A reversible shearling coat could be the solution. Just one coat to achieve two looks, and one of the smartest methods to stockpile a wintertime ensemble with out filling your closet.
How reversible shearling works
Lambskin with shearling on it is called shearling. The leather or suede is the outside in a regular coat, the wool is the inside. A reversible piece is a piece that is completed on both sides and can be worn on either side.
Some styles alternate between smooth suede and soft wool. Others use shearling with taffeta or other fabric on the back. In either case the coat is complete inside and out and the seams are not showing and the lining is not visible.
The additional cost is just worth it.
The single-sided coat is priced slightly lower than the reversible coat. Here’s the reason it can be beneficial:
- Two coats in one. A neat and tidy suede finish for the office and a snuggly, warm finish for the weekend.
- Less closet space. Only one hanger – no two!
- Better for travel. Dress once and change your outfit.
- Greater wear for each dollar of cost. It will be more accessible to you and you will use it more frequently, due to its versatility.
The suede side of the garment is styled. The suede out.
The suede or leather will be the more formal option. Worn at the waist over fitted knit and tailored pants or open over a knee-length slip with knee boots. Keep accessories simple. Warm suede colours are great with a leather bag and gold jewellery.
Styling the wool side
When shearling is turned out, it creates a soft, relaxed and textured feel. It’s perfect with jeans, chunky knits and sneakers or snow boots. For curlicues or long haired lambs, this cut looks as though it was more of a teddy coat, but the lamb’s warm and light.
Before purchasing, be sure to ask a few questions:
- Finish on both sides. Turn it inside out in the store. Both sides should be the “front”.
- Pockets. Pockets that can be used on either side of the coat are a desirable feature of good reversible coats.
- Closures. Zips are great for reversible designs, but stay out of the mix with belts and toggles, which look good on both sides.
- Weight. It should be something that feels light, and can be worn throughout the day. It’s a good sign if the lamb is made from merino.
Looking after it
Caring for a shearling is much like caring for any other type of sheep: hang it on a wide hanger and out of the heat, and allow it to air dry. Since both sides are prone to wear, rotate sides frequently to maintain even wear.
Does it make sense for you?
If you’re looking for something versatile but without the coat collection, reversible shearling is one of the best winter purchases you can make. It’s functional, it’s cozy, and it silently doubles your wardrobe with each outfit.
